The SSDI Application Process
The SSDI application process has four main stages: filing the application with the SSA, medical review by a state Disability Determination Services (DDS) office, an initial decision, and — for most claimants — one or more levels of appeal.
You can apply for SSDI online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at a local Social Security field office. The SSA verifies work credits and non-medical eligibility, then forwards the file to your state's Disability Determination Services (DDS) for medical review, which typically takes 6 to 8 months. Most initial applications are denied, so the appeals process is a normal part of the road to approval.

How do I apply for SSDI?
You can apply online at ssa.gov, by calling 1-800-772-1213, or in person at any Social Security field office.
What documents does SSA need?
The SSA asks for medical records, treatment history, work history for the last 15 years, W-2s or self-employment tax returns, and information about any workers' compensation or public disability benefits.
How long does the initial decision take?
Most initial SSDI decisions take 6 to 8 months, though Compassionate Allowances conditions can be decided in weeks.
What happens if I'm denied?
You have 60 days to file a request for reconsideration; if that is denied, the next step is a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge — see the appeals hub.
